Before God saved me out of the world in 2008, I used to have a dream of being in darkness and trying to find the light. Over a period of about 25 years I probably had that dream at least a dozen times, if not more.
In my dream the darkness was fearful and I sensed an evil presence coming. I would fumble around trying to find the light switch so I could turn on the light. Sometimes I would find the lamp and turn the switch but the light would not turn on. I was never able to turn the light on and would wake up in a panic with my heart racing.
The Holy Spirit brought this recurring dream to my attention a few days ago as I was speaking to the Lord about dreams and praying for Him to send dreams to various unbelievers I know. Here is the interpretation of my dream. The darkness in the dream was literally just that, I was in darkness. The fact that I could not turn on the light, which represents Jesus Christ, was telling me I was without Christ since He is the light of the world. (John 8:12) I know that many unsaved people are having this same dream all over the world. And that is the mercy of God to open eyes to the fact that we need a savior. Call upon Him now while He may be found.
My mom had a recurring dream before she recently rededicated her life to Christ. In her dream she was away from home and trying to find the key to her car so she could go home. She would search and search and could not find her keys and would wake up disturbed. She came to understand that the key is Jesus and without Him, she would not be going home to heaven to be with Him. Since then she has found the key, hallelujah! (Rev 3:7, Rev 1:18)
Soon after my brother starting seeking Jesus a few years ago, he had a dream that he was in the shower and blood was coming out of the shower head. This dream confirmed to him that he had indeed been washed by the blood of Jesus, hallelujah! (Rev 1:5)
I had prayed that the Lord would give dreams to my 17 year old nephew who has been in trouble with drugs. Last week he told my brother that he had a “weird” dream. My brother asked him if it was from God and he replied, “oh yeah!” My nephew has not told my brother the details yet, but hopefully the dream will have its intended affect; salvation and repentance! (Joel 2:28, Acts 2:17.)
My friend told me just this week about a dream her unbelieving sister-in-law had soon after her dad’s recent death. In the dream she was in a house and saw her dad standing in front of an open door. He looked to be in good health and no longer had his walking cane. There was a glorious light on the other side of the door. Her dad then stepped through the door as if to say, follow me. The open door is of course Jesus, and the light is Jesus. The house probably represented the dreamer. My friend planned to tell her sister-in-law the meaning. (John 10:9)
Dreams are just one of the ways that God speaks to us and they are a powerful communication from heaven. I have had many dreams where the Lord showed me His truth and things that would come to pass in my life. God is also using dreams to awaken people in false religions such as Islam, Hindu and New Age.
Be careful of sending your dreams to others for interpretation. God will sovereignly interpret your dreams when you pray about them. I believe that dream interpretation can come from other believers through the power of the Holy Spirit in an organic way. I was the one who told my brother that the blood in his shower was that of Christ. But I take issue with those who do dream interpretation and accept money for it. Even if it is presented as “accepting a freewill offering” I find that too similar to soothsaying and it does not seem biblical to me.
Refer to these scriptures about dreams:
Genesis 40:8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.
Isaiah 8:19-20 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
In closing I want to encourage my dear brothers and sisters in Christ to understand that dreams are a very powerful tool that God is using to awaken people. Pray that God will send dreams and visions to your unsaved loved ones and those who have fallen away from the faith. Stand on the truth of God’s Word that says;
"If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:14
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” John 15:7
In Christ, Sarah
