The Fragrance of the Lord

On a recent Sunday morning when I returned to my house and upon opening the front door I was met with the most awesome scent. I was also met by my dog who is always there to greet me when I open the front door. It was very strange and overwhelming because I always take a sniff to make sure I don't smell "doggy odor." That is my clue she needs a bath!

When I entered my small condo living room I was enveloped and overwhelmed by the most beautiful scent in the air. I was very confused about it and went around the house trying to solve the mystery. There were no flowers, no potpourri, no scented candles or oils. Where did that scent come from?? It was a wonderfully sweet smell, but not too sweet, more organic and natural, but not musky at all. It was a pure and clean scent that was not like any smell manufactured by man. It was literally a blanket of fragrance and it enveloped me! It was the most awesome scent I have ever experienced!

Later that day I read the blog entry from Michael Boldea's Homeward Bound blog and here is the opening scripture from "The Key to Victory":

2 Corinthians 2:14
“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

When I read that scripture I knew immediately that the Lord was telling me something. I started to cry and I felt very elated! The fragrance of the Lord was indeed in my place and I knew His Holy Spirit was there and He is guiding me. This fragrance was a confirmation of God's love. I knew that because of my choice to be a devoted servant and because of my decision to commit and be obedient, the Lord was pleased and letting me know!

The other point I want to illustrate by telling this story is that God is very real! He is not a myth, a story or a fairy tale. There was a time when I doubted because I could not feel a connection or a presence. I realize now that I could not feel Him because my sin was separating me from God!

Praise the Lord for His mercy in drawing me back to His son, to repantance and into fellowship with Him!

  1. I enjoyed reading your message. Praise God! I too have had this experience. I understand. It is so wonderful that the Lord makes Himself known this way. It is like He is saying, "I Am Here". We have a lot in common. Praise the Lord. The sweet fragance of the Lord!

  2. Hi Penny,
Our Lord is so awesome!! I can never forget that fragrance. Sometimes when I detect a whiff of something in the air I get excited and hope it is the "Fragrance of the Lord". I have experienced it only this one time so far. It is a supernatural event and it is very edifying to the spirit!

  3. Thank you for sharing your experience ... I too have smelled the presence of the Lord. For me it was in my car in the dead of winter. It's a spiritual reality that completely amazes me. A few weeks after it happened, I began to wonder if there was some other practical explaination for the smell ... I pulled out my journal and began to read what I had written about my experience and as I read about it ... I began to smell the smell again. Praise God for His intimate love for His people.

  5. Praise the Lord ! I too experienced the awesome fragrance of Lord Jesus, when first time I visited a prayer assembly. After which I have been experiencing the same fragrance among the most powerful people of the lord when they keep their hand on you and bless you.

  6. I am so glad to find this site-I experienced the fragrance of the Lord this morning! It had to be-there were no candles or anything else burning, I smelled the most wonderful smell like part cinnamin and part something else while watching an Amy Grant Video called "Heirlooms". The song touches me deeply because of what I'm walking through with my oldest son-that fragrance came and it was wonderful..

  7. I googled "Fragrance of the Lord" to see if others had experienced this too and came to this site. When I became a Christian 7 years ago I had this experience several times -- sometimes the scent is sweet like honeysuckle and sometimes spicy sweet (hard to describe). Last Sunday I was alone on our stage a few hours before our children's Christmas pageant was to begin and smelled the incredible spicy sweet fragrance. It lingered for a long time and is so amazing that it makes you want to breathe deeply so you can memorize it! How wonderful that God reveals Himself to us in this way!

  8. "It is so amazing that it makes you want to breathe deeply..." That is how I felt when it happened to me for the first time. I breathed so deeply that I could feel the intoxication in my spirit. I was lifted higher with each breath, and didn't want the Fragrance and Presence of the Lord to ever leave me.

  9. I have experienced the fragrance of the Lord during the early days of my new birth. Once after my regular early morning prayer time my bedroom filled with the smell of roses. Even after that experience I would smell the fragrance of Heaven at different times throughout the day. I know what heaven smells like!! I shall never forget those days as long as I live. Truly that was an awesome honeymoon experience with my Lord Jesus!

  10. I have also experienced the fragrance of the Lord. It began after my 24 year old son died 5 months ago and has happened many times since, at randon times...but mostly in the middle of the night...frequently I wake up to this sweet aroma. When it first happened I got out of bed to see where it was coming from, and it was only in my bedroom. I knew it was the fragrance of the Lord ministring to me as I slept. It reminds me of the scripture in Psalms that says He gives blessings to His children as they sleep. It's so comforting to know that God knows my pain and that He loves me so much that He makes Himself known through my physical senses. It's amazing...He's amazing...

  11. That is so cool. I was worshipping God this morning while in my kitchen cooking and I felt his presence and then suddenly there was the most intense smell of mint. It's still there an hour later. I also once had a rapture dream and Jesus came to me in it. There were three bundles of roses in my dream growing out from my floor and sometimes I am in my room at night and I smell the same roses that I smelled in my dream.
What an awesome God we serve.

  12. On several occasions during the middle of one recent hot summer, I experienced a wonderful strong fragrance of what seemed to be woodsy spices. Another evening while I was speaking with my husband, the Fragrance filled our computer room. Last year, while working on my mom's memorial service, the Fragrance filled the room for three consecutive evenings. Just this last Sunday, while in pre service prayer before the first service in our new venue, the beautiful Fragrance filled my senses. It was so wonderful and unmistakable as the Fragrance of the Lord.

Thank you for your site that has made this understandable for me. Blessing to you and all your readers!

  14. I have experienced this quite a few times in my walk with the Lord. It isn't frequent, maybe once or twice a year. I remember once, I was in a church service, at the front of the altar, in praise and worship, I had my eyes closed and then I smelled an incense type smell. I opened my eyes because the smell was so strong that I thought someone had lit incense or a candle or something (not that it had ever happened before in our church services) however, the fragrance was so strong I thought for sure I would see the smoke of incense. I asked the Lord, "What do I smell?" He answered, "Sandalwood." I didn't even know what sandalwood was, had never heard of it. I found a short blip online at www.hegai.org: SANDALWOOD - WORSHIP

In the time of David sandalwood was used to make instruments of worship such as the harps and lyres. Plainly we can see these are instruments of worship in the natural but spiritually speaking, we have been called to be 'living instruments'. Paul writing to the Romans states, "I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship". Solomon used sandal wood to construct the steps leading up to the Temple. Again, this shows our approach to God which is always through worship.

Our portion in the anointing of the Sandalwood is to become living and holy instruments of worship learning to abide in His presence; making worship a lifestyle and not simply an action.
I asked the Lord about it and He told me that He was pleased with our worship that morning and showed us this by giving us the fragrance of Sandalwood.

Most of my "fragrance experiences" are floral/spice in nature, very pleasant smelling - hard to describe.

  15. The LORD had blessed me with His awesome fragrance back in 2002. My mother was very ill; she was frail and had heart problems. She was living with me in a ministry home (Shepherd's Heart Ministries) where I was a house parent for several adults with various form of mental illness. There was much prayer and Bible study in this home, but my mother remained a self-described atheist. Until one night!

She was in cardiac arrest and struggling very hard to breathe. I and the director of the home sat in her room and prayed. I tried once again, "Mom - wouldn't you like to accept the LORD?" Between gasps for air she whispered "Yes, but I don't know how!" We led her in the sinner's prayer and she breathed easier and fell asleep.

Through the night I sat at the foot of her bed; the director of the home remained there with us. In the middle of the night a fragrance like we'd never experienced before became very apparent. It was as if there was a column of this fragrance emanating from the ceiling right over Mom's bed. It was so distinct and so localized that if I moved even an inch from this invisible column one way or the other, the smell was completely gone!

Well, Mom survived four months after that, and was the sweetest, most joyous person. Such a change! She'd wake up in the morning and look out her window and say, "Oh, what a beautiful day! It's a lovely day to be alive, and a lovely day to go home to the LORD!"

That fragrance was a confirmation to me that the LORD had Mom. That she knew him. Praise be to God!

  16. I recently came back from Israel and I experienced this twice and it was absolutely AMAZING!!! I was approaching the wailing wall and I stopped to view its sight and put in my prayer requests. Then all of a sudden I smelled the sweetest aroma I have EVER smelled in my life! I looked to my left and to my right to see if someone was burning incents, but there was no one burning it. There was no one next to me. After that experience I asked my mother what was that smell and she said it is the Fragrance of the Lord and she too smelled it. The second time was when I went to where the tomb of Jesus was. The room was filled to capacity. When I walked to a section by myself I was overcome with the same Aroma, I immediately looked for a candle burning but there was none, and the most AMAZING thing is that it smelled exactly the same as the first time. I feel honored and blessed to have experienced this. My life is forever changed....I know there is a GOD!!

    2. My husband and I both had this experience. We lived in a remote desert area of Arizona and we were at a low point. He had lost his job of 20 years and we were losing our home, our ministry, our dogs and everything else. We were walking along the road in the middle of nowhere, speaking of walking by faith and praising the Lord for even the things that on the surface seemed disastrous. To us, we knew there must be a reason for it and that God is sovereign. We continued praising Him. All of a sudden during our praise, my heart was touched deeply and brought me to tears. It was so strong that I asked my husband, "Did you feel that?" I turned to see the tears in his eyes too and he affirmed that he did. We took a couple more steps and he said, "Do you smell that?" A strong fragrance of Honeysuckle enveloped us. It was the middle of summer in the desert and there were no flowers or people around. We knew the Lord was with us and confirmed to us even through his Word that night that He would provide for us. It would take a book to tell of how wonderfully he has confirmed His promise to us since then. My husband is a Baptist minister.
